Every two years, a swarm of young women in white gowns and long satin gloves descends upon the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City for the International Debutante Ball. This is considered the most prestigious and most exclusive debutante ball in the world, inviting the daughters of some of the world’s wealthiest and aristocratic families. Debutantes, from 16 to 25 years of age, spend a long time preparing for the very formal event. A perfect presentation of dignified posture, refined manners and elegant small talk is expected of them. While traditionally, the balls were designed to find potential high-society suitors for the young women, in modern times the emphasis has shifted to networking and creating long-lasting friendships.
